5 Coaching Cues

Here are 5 coaching cues that you will hear constantly in The Rack Athletic Performance Center.


1) Spread the floor!


2) Knees out!


3) Pack your shoulders!


4) Set your breath!


5) Stay tight!


Some of these cues may mean nothing to you. Maybe you know them all because we yell them constantly at you. Many of the athletes that come though our doors have never heard of these concepts before. But after a couple of days the coaching cues will be in your head for the rest of your life... Don't worry, we will still say them! 


There are many more coaching cues for specific lifts You may not hear all of them. One athlete may need to hear one more then the other. It will change. One week you may need to spread the floor, another you can't seem to set your breath right if your life depended on it. The coaching cues adapt and change as does the lifter. Your coach must be able to see what you need in the moment and say those coaching cues on the spot. If you don't have a coach to watch you, then video yourself with your phone so you can watch your form. One things for sure, you’ll notice there are many similar tips/cues that apply to each lift:

  • Ensure your setup is sound

  • Pull your shoulders together tightly

  • Keep your lats tight

  • Squeeze the bar tight

  • Breathe into your diaphragm and push against your belt

  • Stay tight for the entire lift

  • Keep your air for the entire lift
