Belly Breathing

"Set your breath" - Big coaching cue we use here at The Rack. You have to learn how to breath right in order to lift heavy.

 

Breathe in on the easy part and out on the hard part right? Yes that's the way to do it if you are doing allot of reps, an easy accessory lift, or you have some blood pressure issues that you need to be cautious with...

 

If you want to create some abdominal pressure using your breath and diaphragm you need to learn to set your breath. You need to learn how to breathe into your belly. You need to learn how to breathe into the belt and create the extra pressure to stay tight during your big lift. This protects your spine and keeps your core solid.

 

Test it out:

Stand up. Put one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly. Take a big breath. Did your chest rise or did your belly? Most likely your chest rose. Try it again, but breathe into your belly. Don’t let your chest rise at all. This is a skill that you’ll need to learn how to use when needed. It’s another tool in the toolbox that will help your training.
